Microwaveable soup cups

17 March 2006

Spanish caldos (soups similar to consommés) manufacturer Gallina Blanca has responded to the growing trend for on-the-go eating by launching its caldos in Spain in individual microwave able rigid barrier cups from EDV Packaging of Barcelona.

EDV has coextruded and thermoformed the base material, designing the containers with a PP/EVOH/PP white structure. It says this “precise combination” of barriers guarantees excellent thermal stability via a robust sterilisation process. Designed for ambient storage, the product has a 12-month shelf life.

The cup incorporates dual-purpose ribs in the side panels which resist deformation during processing and provide some insulation properties to the customer when the product inside is hot. The container is hermetically sealed using a peelable plastic lid, thus offering a 100% plastic barrier solution, and incorporates a high quality, rotogravure printed shrink sleeve and an injected rigid overcap, supplied by Procap Llagostera, which facilitates stacking.
