New research from The Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (Incpen) reveals that 70% of consumers surveyed believe recycling cans, bottles, paper and other materials is the most important thing they can do for the environment.

This compares with just 46% in 1999, suggesting public awareness campaigns promoting recycling actually work. Incpen points out, however, that global climate change is actually the greatest current environmental threat, despite just 5% of those surveyed believing taking fewer foreign holidays would make a difference.

Producing primary and secondary packaging accounts for just 3% of a typical household's energy, while manufacturing the household goods accounts for 34%.
