Mercury captures Certiforms

20 January 2009

Food packaging specialist Certiforms has been acquired for an undisclosed sum by Mercury Packaging, manufacturer of flexible packaging for the mailing, magazine publishing, retail, security and fulfilment markets. The latest in a series of initiatives aimed at expansion, it will boost Mercury’s turnover by £1.2mn.

Tony Stanger, Mercury’s MD, says: “Certiforms is a natural fit with Mercury and enables us to offer enhanced production and print capacity together with strengthened service levels and technical excellence. It also allows us to quickly penetrate the previously untapped food industry.”

Certiforms currently operates from a facility in Macclesfield where it manufactures high quality wicketted bags, in a range of styles and options, plain or printed in up to eight colours.

Mercury, established in 1999, employs some 50 people at its 33,000 ft2 site in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and has a current turnover of £5mn. The company specialises in the supply of high clarity PP films for display purposes, and PE film specially designed to provide the strength and impact qualities required for protection. It recently added a range of laminates to supplement its single ply films for the food packaging sector.

As well as a dedicated print room housing a recently installed £1.3 mn eight-colour gearless press, and extensive warehousing facilities, Mercury operates eight converting machines producing simple glue line bags; point of sale, bank note and coin bags; high security bags; and mailing and courier envelopes.

The company also specialises in security and track and trace features including sequential numbering, bar coding, and tamper resistant and tamper evident closure systems.
