Machinery training software

9 September 2005

Packaging and processing machinery companies seeking a way to add value and differentiation to their service can now offer customers sophisticated machine-specific interactive training software following the launch of a new venture by former Thermo Electron technical and marketing director John Craig.

Craig, an engineer and microcomputer expert, has established Halo Training to address what he regards as an unfulfilled market niche – writing machine-specific Flash media software guides to help operators get the best out of equipment.

He explains: "Having worked for several large machinery manufacturers, it often struck me that, after a few hours' initial training, suppliers often just left operatives to get on with it. Providing in-house training can be costly, the selected person may not always be there, and most operatives would get more satisfaction from resolving machinery issues themselves – hence my idea for machine-specific, interactive software available on-demand."

He has thus developed a training software package, dubbed On Demand Training (ODT) (in basic "skeleton" form – modifiable for each machine), which includes step-by-step video presentations with voiceover, close-up on-screen guidance to key operations and parts, and animation.

Craig plans marketing the software – the ODT modules can be provided via PCs, laptops, or web-based browsers – to both machinery manufacturers and brand owners direct.
