Linerless labelling system could offer 40% cost savings

28 September 2007

The system, pioneered by Italian labelling manufacturer Irplast, for which Advanced Dynamics is the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor, dispenses with traditional paper backing. The “breakthrough formula” comprises bio-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film with a solvent-less adhesive coating which grips but does stick on contact with itself.

Due to the lack of a backing strip, Advanced Dynamics says the linear amount of labels per roll is doubled, giving a 50% reduction in label changeover time. The company adds: “While the resulting cost savings give the solution obvious appeal there is also an aesthetic benefit to linerless labelling; it removes the potential for paper flecks or adhesive ticks, giving the label a pristine, untarnished finish and thus enhanced graphic presentation.”

Irplast offers three specific linerless label formats, all of which can be dispensed by compact end-of-line labellers that can be added to “almost any packaging line”. These include a system for multipacks compatible with plastic bottles, multi-layer laminates, rigid and flexible packaging and boxes/cases; a wraparound label solution available with partial or complete adhesive coating, and a variant which can be “morphed” to the product shape, offering protection against scratching due to reverse printing. The latter also “covers greater areas”, and can thus accommodate more information.
