Lightning launches biodegradbale air pillows

14 March 2007

Lightning Packaging has been awarded sole distribution rights for a range of “environmentally-friendly” biodegradable and compostable air pillows, which can be used both to cushion fragile items in transit and as a cost-effective voidfill.

The flexible film used to produce the pillows is manufactured from sustainable and renewable starch materials; the packaging is formulated to harmlessly degrade in landfill conditions in 60 days.

Lightning says that while many companies may already be using biodegradable loose-fill cushioning, its air pillows “represent further progress because transportation and storage take less energy and space and the air pillows cost less than loosefill”. The company says one bag of loose-fill cushioning requires 15 cubic feet of transportation and storage space while, in comparison, one 200mm roll of air cushioning needs under 1 cubic foot of similar space and produces the equivalent of eight bags of loosefill.
