Laser marking laminated foil pouches

13 July 2010

Laser marking the plastics film surface on laminated foil pouches provides a permanent, readable mark for critical information such as expiration dates, product IDs, and tracking numbers.

In a recent application, Laserlines used a Synrad 25W laser and FH Flyer marking head with a 200mm focal length lens, all controlled by Synrad's WinMark Pro software, to produce a focused spot size of 290mm on the foil packaging. The mark file consisted of a string of 20 characters, plus a rectangular logo, measuring 98.3 x 6.4mm. For a power level of 25W, the mark velocity was set to 254mm/sec.

The resulting mark was completed in a cycle time of 1.03sec and is said to be highly legible. The CO2 beam easily melts the plastics film, producing an easily readable, slightly raised mark with an embossed look.
