Laser coders improve the spirits

16 January 2006

Kingsland Wines & Spirits, the UK's largest independent wine and spirit bottler, has selected two Weber SolarJet 30W laser coders for marking wine bottles on high speed bottling lines at its Irlam, Manchester plant and plans adding two more later this year.

Traditionally, Weber says, the Julian date codes and time and place of manufacture data legally required on all UK-sold drinks have been applied to bottles either by inkjet printers or on labels. However, Weber claims both methods have disadvantages – traceability is lost if the label is removed and the black inkjet ink "can prove hard to read on green glass".

In comparison, the company says the SolarJet 30W laser coders selected by Kingsland produce permanent, clear, easy to read text just 4mm high at speeds of up to 300 bottles/min.
