Keg wins top WPO award

22 August 2008

The Heineken TenCan Beer Keg has been acclaimed as the 'Best of the Best' by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), winning the President's Gold Award. It is the first time this accolade has gone to a rigid metal container.

The keg, developed jointly by Heineken Beer Systems and Impress, features a patented integrated pressure system to keep the beer fresh for 30 days after opening. Distortion printing and a special lacquer are said to give the container a brilliant appearance. The special shaping of the top and bottom of the keg was undertaken using Impress production processes.

The plastic handles assembled after filling are designed to provide convenient handling for the consumer and allow storage of the tapping device. The WPO Award recognises both the container's outstanding design and aesthetic appeal, and "the challenging levels to which tinplate is drawn to create the distinctive shape whilst ensuring the pressure integrity of the keg is maintained".
