Innovia Films has launched what it claims is the first metallised biodegradable film suitable for both industrial and home composting.
NatureFlex NM, a cellulose-based film produced from renewable wood pulp, has been tested to, and passed, the strict protocols of EN13432 and ASTM D6400 and has also been tested for ambient compostability.
Innovia says it is the only metallised biodegradable film able to be home composted because the level of metal incorporated – less than 0.02% – slows degradation by a matter of days but does not interfere with biodegradability in any other way.
Modified coatings ensure “excellent metal lay-down and adhesion”, providing a very high moisture barrier with a transmission rate of less than 10 tropical (30 degs C, 90% relative humidity). Static-free regardless of climactic conditions, NatureFlex NM is printable using both solvent water-based and UV inks and has “excellent lustre and sheen” .
The film’s slip characteristics have been formulated with twistwrap applications in mind; Innovia anticipates especially strong demand from confectionery packers.
