Next month's Packaging Innovation Show at Birmingham's NEC promises to focus on brand, retail and consumer needs covering all areas of packaging and packaging innovation, "from blue sky developments to more fundamental packaging challenges and opportunities within an increasingly consumer-centred packaging universe".

The event is being staged from September 27-29 by Reed Exhibitions following "the incredible success" of the Packaging Innovation Show feature at Total Processing & Packaging 2004. Rexam is the headline sponsor.

Procter & Gamble director of corporate r&d Neil MacGilp's opening address will examine the importance of R&D partnerships within the packaging supply chain, while seminars, with speakers from organisations including Rexam, Mintel, MY Healthcare, PDD Design, the British Brands Group and Field Packaging, will cover topics ranging from "learning from global packaging developments" and "drivers of consumer packaging" to "building environmental sustainability into the design process" and "material technologies of the future".

Other highlights include the 2020 Get Smart Design Challenge, where top design companies and converters will showcase entries themed around futuristic concepts like active packaging, and a series of free RFID seminars from Packaging Today's sister magazine RFID Solutions to include contributions from Tesco, BT Auto-ID, The Packaging Federation, Zebra Technologies Europe, PIRA International and leading UK barcoding, e-commerce and RFID organisation GS1 UK.
