Huhtamaki to showcase compostable packs at BRAU

1 November 2004

Designed primarily for foodservice operators and use at outdoor festivals and other mass events, the company's Bioware products have taken a year to develop and are mainly being produced at Huhtamaki's Als plant in Germany. They are currently thermoformed, using "more environmentally friendly" production methods, from Cargill Dow's NatureWorks PLA corn starch-based "polymer" and other compostable materials; Huhtamaki says it has agreements with a number of other suppliers.

Bioware cups produced from NatureWorks PLA were successfully used by Belgium's second largest brewer Alken Maes for three of the country's' beer festivals this summer, while Huhtamaki has just augmented the Bioware portfolio with new snap-fit closure salad containers. It says it is already seeing "significant interest" in the range.
