High-barrier medical films

16 June 2005

US company Tekni-Films has developed a range of rigid films for the medical packaging industry offering high moisture and oxygen barrier properties.

Tekniflex PGA and PGOA films are based on multi-layer lamination constructions based on PETG, EVOH and PCTFE. The film laminations are suited to blister packaging applications requiring ultra high barrier qualities and clarity.

For this specific application Tekni-Films selected Eastman Chemical Company's Eastar 6763 PETG copolyester because of its thermoforming properties for complex medical trays. It is also sterilisable by irradiation (Gamma or e-beam) and the final pack is said to offer good physical protection due to its stiffness and resilience.

Eastar copolyester can be used in combination with a variety of lidding structures and offers an easy method of seal integrity inspection since the seal can be viewed through the blue tint of the sheet.
