Graham helps Heinz with ketchup 'art'

17 March 2006

Heinz in the US has introduced nationwide a plastic ketchup bottle designed to appeal to children’s sense of fun incorporating a closure with three different-shaped openings, “splat”, “double double” and “draw”.

The 20 ounce, clear “Heinz Silly Squirts” PET container, with barrier properties and an “unusually large” 43mm neck opening, is topped by the trio of pop-up caps (from Seaquist Perfect). Joe Labadie, new product engineer for bottle designer and producer Graham Packaging, says: “After Heinz held focus groups, they came to us with general parameters on designing the kid-friendly package. They wanted a round container with a large billboard or label space to promote the idea of three different dispensing patterns for kids to enjoy.”

Jeffrey Karp, packaging project manager at the Heinz Innovation Center, adds: “We worked closely with Graham Packaging and Seaquist Closures to develop a bottle that kids can hold and manipulate to enjoy their very own ketchup creations.”
