Global tag portfolio

17 August 2005

Finnish tag manufacturer UPM Rafsec presented at last month's Smart Labels USA 2005 exhibition in Baltimore what it claims is the world's first global Gen 2 tag portfolio for the retail supply chain.

Having reportedly developed the first Gen 1 EPC tag in 2003, the company says it is "again leading the industry in the development of high performance RFID tags with an innovative approach that benefits customers by improving speed and cost-effectiveness of UHF RFID tag design and production".

The approach, dubbed Rafsec OneTenna, allows a single antenna design to function in every region in the world. It is thus no longer necessary to produce numerous antenna designs to meet different regional RFID regulations. Careful IC placement "guarantees" optimum performance in individual regions.

UPM Rafsec says it will continue to also manufacture and support its Gen 1 HF and UHF products.

A new factory in Fletcher, North Carolina, scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2005, will concentrate on high volume production of UHF EPC tags used primarily in supply chain management.
