Global ISO standards to come on packaging and environment

17 November 2009

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has set up a new sub-committee (TC 122/SC4) to work on global packaging and environment standards, which is due to meet for the first time in Stockholm on 10-11 December 2009, co-chaired by the standardisation bodies of Sweden and China.

In developing global ISO standards on packaging and the environment with a ‘true global perspective’, the aim is to reduce the environmental impact of packaging, minimise the risk of technical barriers to trade and avoid conflict with existing standards.

The starting point will be the existing EN standards and Guidelines developed by the Asian Packaging Federation.

The result will be a common reference point for companies, consumers, environmental interests groups and regulatory authorities.
