Gerresheimer acquires Superfos Pharma

9 January 2006

The purchase price was not disclosed.

The acquisition follows the German-headquartered glass and plastic packaging company's purchase last September of America's Glass Group, including its 45.7% share in Chinese speciality glass manufacturer Beijing Wheaton. At the time Gerresheimer's ceo and president Dr Axel Herberg described the acquisition of the Glass Group, which had been forced to file for Chapter 11 US bankruptcy protection earlier in the year, as "a quantum leap on the way to establishing Gerresheimer as a leading worldwide supplier of pharmaceutical packaging."

Headquartered in Valerose, Denmark, Superfos Pharma employs 120 staff, has an annual turnover of around € 25m, operates two factories in Denmark and has marketing offices throughout Europe. The company develops, produces and sells custom-made plastic packaging and systems for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

Gerresheimer's Herberg says: "We are currently experiencing a very dynamic phase of Group development. The latest acquisition marks another important step on our way to becoming a leading worldwide supplier of pharmaceutical packaging. We are expanding our technological base and creating new growth opportunities. Via the two acquisitions we have increased our pharmaceutical sales turnover by over €70m in just a few months, simultaneously establishing an important position in Eastern Asia."

Gerresheimer says Superfos Pharma ideally complements the plastics operations of its subsidiaries Bünder Glass and Polfa.
