Geest joins M&S RFID venture

28 July 2003

Fresh produce supplier Geest has revealed it will begin installing RFID technology, as part of a Marks and Spencer roll-out that is thought to be the world's largest adoption of the technology to date.

In its first venture into RFID, Geest's seven UK locations will be equipped with antennae that can read and write information to RFID labels attached to plastics reusable trays, supplied by Linpac Materials Handling.

Intellident, which is contracted to supply the M&S RFID system, will supply Geest with portable scanners that will be used to read information on the product, supplier and production date.

The move is part of a three-year programme by M&S to replace barcodes with RFID systems on 3.5M reusable trays, dollies and roll cages used throughout the fresh produce supply chain.
