Game, set and match to Domino's ace 400

27 July 2007

In preparation for the All England Wimbledon tennis Championships, Tipografic used Domino A400 printers and an Editor GT controller to print the special “Wimbledon” promotional labels for Robinsons on a sheet-fed press. The promotion featured a unique eight-digit code, printed onto the reverse of the squash bottle labels, which consumers can send by text to see if they have won the chance for their children to play on Wimbledon's Centre Court.

Repeating last year's “tried and tested formula”, nine Domino A400 high-speed printers were installed across a Heidelberg B1 six-colour press within Tipografic's label production line in Birkenhead recently to deliver 60 million codes onto bottles of varying sizes, inline. The printing was managed by the Domino Editor GT controller, itself able to process high quantities of variable codes to match Tipografic's “just-in-time” production output.

A specially constructed aluminium cradle had to be initially designed, manufactured and fitted to one of the printing decks on the Heidelberg to accommodate the nine A400 printing jets.

“Domino has once again proved the perfect match,” says Tipografic production director Barry Davidson. “Despite the production schedule being brought forward by two weeks last year, thanks to Domino we were able to respond well to schedule. We had no hesitation in choosing to work with them again this year.”
