Frozen foods wrapped up

BorForm, recently co-developed by plastics producer Borealis and packaging converter Tommen Gram, is a new PE-based polyolefin for film-based vacuum form packaging

The companies say GramFlex, a BorForm-based film from Tommen Gram, offers frozen food manufacturers a cost-effective alternative to traditional cardboard and laminate materials for packaging frozen foods. Primarily designed for 5-20 kg transport and storage packs for frozen meat and fish, BorForm complies with all relevant food safety specifications under EU Directive 2002/72/EC.

Rolf Draveng, Tommen Gram md, says: “Food industry feedback emphasised a real need for a new form of packaging that would ease transportation and increase production efficiency. Companies were also facing ever-tougher consumer demands for environmentally-friendly, appealing, easy-to-open food packaging.”

Borealis says BorForm's lighter weight will improve efficiency and logistics and cut material consumption, while the film will run smoothly on vacuum formers. Meanwhile its faster freezing speed can reportedly cut energy use by 30%.
