Fresh from the 'chippie'

Boxes GH is staking a claim on the first fish and chips pack to be cooked in the microwave yet retain the product's traditional crispiness, the result of microrite susceptor technology and carton design developed by Boxes for Marr Foods.

However, this claim is being disputed by Thistle Seafoods, formerly Connors Seafoods, which says it was the first to develop a pack in 2000 with A&R Packaging using technology patented by Microrite to produce the same results. Managing director of Thistle Seafoods Tony Scatterty says product development is on-going.

Marr's Microwaveable Fish and Chips will be sold initially in Sainsbury which has a short-term exclusivity agreement.

The tradtional fish supper is ready from frozen in 5.5 minutes and is said to cook evenly and stay crisp. Other Marr products planned in the range are Cod Nuggets n Chips, Cod Nuggets and Cod Portions.

The Boxes GH carton is a lock erect, six-colour high gloss with UV varnish product made from 450 micron Grease Freeze board. A tear strip is incorporated to ensure the consumer uses the correct level of venting.
