Free advice on design efficiency to cut waste

19 February 2007

Packaging professionals are being encouraged to use a new service from Envirowise to access free advice on eliminating “excess” packaging through cleaner design.

The resource efficiency programme is offering producers help in taking steps to “design out” unnecessary packaging materials at the very beginning of the process, “thereby lowering the long-term environmental impact”.

Companies can register online at www.envirowise.gov.uk/howmuchair where they will be required to enter some initial data on their packaging format and usage. They will then receive free guidance within 10 working days - outlining opportunities to innovate and reduce their packaging waste through more efficient design.

Dr Martin Gibson, Envirowise programme director, says: “While we support the excellent work currently taking place to reuse and recycle many materials, priority must be given to reducing resource use at the design stage, which can often generate long-term cost efficiencies. We hope this free consultation will help kick-start a range of cleaner design action plans.”

Computer peripherals and connectivity specialist Belkin worked with Envirowise last year to review the packaging on one of its network card products. “The alternative design we identified has resulted in a 50% reduction in box volume, which boosts transport efficiency as well as cutting material costs,” says Ken Simpson, European regulatory compliance manager.

“We could save more than 18,000kg of paper each year and reduce packaging-related CO2 emissions by 104 tonnes annually, with clear financial and environmental benefits. We would encourage other businesses to take part in this Envirowise challenge and seize the opportunity to start lowering the environmental impact of their packaging.”

Businesses can source confidential advice on a wide range of resource efficiency issues by calling the Envirowise helpline: 0800 585 794; www.envirowise.gov.uk
