Marking European Forest Week, 9-13 December 2013, CEPI joined forces with three other European forestry-related associations to publish a new children’s storybook, The Unexpected Forest.
Written by Magali De Rijck and beautifully illustrated by Roseline d’Oreye, The Unexpected Forest is intended to reach youngsters between the ages of 5-8 years old, and to help educate them on the importance of forests and forest products in their daily lives.
Already available in English, French, Swedish and German, the new book is carefully scripted to introduce the concept of sustainable forestry and forest industries.
The story features Spik the pencil and Booksy the notebook, who go into the woods and discover the secrets of the forest, together realising that they are part of a larger cycle that starts with sustainable forest management.
The two characters meet with the people working in the forest and with forest products, and learn that they themselves once came from the forest.
In addition to CEPI, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, the other partner organisations in the project were: the Confederation of European Forest Owners, CEPF; the European State Forest Association, EUSTAFOR; and the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries, CEI-Bois.
