Flying flood award

UK airline bmi has won a top airline industry award for an airline food pack that remains cool to the touch after oven cooking, delivers high quality retail-style presentation via a wraparound board band and includes comprehensive information on the meal inside for the traveller.

bmi developed its "Watchstrap" pack with Oxfordshire-based frozen ready meal and airline meal producer CFH Group. The four colour litho printing was undertaken by Print Design & Graphics in Tyneside. The pack, which won a silver Mercury Award at Copenhagen's recent International Flight Catering Association exhibition, comprises a CPET tray incorporating a friction fit SBS board band around the centre. The board "watchstrap" features colourful bmi-designed graphics and photographs on the front and detailed nutritional, allergen and ingredient information on the reverse. The SBS board provides a receptive print medium, and, CFH says, remains cool after the meals are heated up, increasing crew handling safety.

Alan Jeyes, CFH Group md, says: "bmi wanted to raise the image of typical airline meals from canteen-style food to more of a gourmet eating experience. We are now looking to offer this pack format to several other airline customers."
