First major UK converter deal for Cargill

5 May 2004

Birmingham-based paper and plastic packaging specialist Europackaging has become the first UK packaging manufacturer and distributor to offer a full range of products made from Cargill Dow's corn starch-based NatureWorks PLA.

Last month it announced that it can now offer a broad range of NatureWorks items, including carrier bags, luxury shopping bags, hinged salad containers, bakery film front bags, vending cups and disposable cutlery.

R+D director Adam Dickinson says the fast-growing company will be targeting environmentally-conscious retailers and consumers. "The new products provide the expected performance of conventional packaging, so making the transition requires little change to a retailer's operations," he explains.

Cargill Dow says NatureWorks is the first commercially viable biopolymer derived from annually renewable resources to perform "equal to or better than" traditional resins.
