Faerch Plast cracks a nut

23 March 2010

Designing a re-closable dispenser tray for The Dutch Nut Group’s nut assortment was a hard nut to crack for Faerch Plast, but success displayed the Danish plastics packaging company’s strength.

“The biggest difficulty was to make the lid easy to open while ensuring that it remained tightly closed during distribution and display. It also had to be easy to handle during the production phase,” said Bastiaan Bekkers, director of Faerch Plast sales on continental Europe.

“The Dutch Nut Group proposed making a cut and perforation of the lid along the flat part, which is normal, and along the side of the lid, which is not. This would be easy and convenient for consumers, but a challenge in our production.”

With sealing film supplier, Maag, and machinery producer, Sealpack, Faerch Plast created a container using clear APET for maximum stability and to display the product at its best.

Intensive testing on the functionality, product shelf life, sealing and handling of the container was carried out before final agreement was reached about the design of the tray and lid.

The result is a tray sealed with a perforated sealing film, with a perforated re-closeable lid that bends at a 90-degree angle and stays open while the contents are poured out.

The packs are manufactured by Faerch Plast in Denmark and delivered to The Dutch Nut Group in the Netherlands.
