The European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA) warmly welcomes the German government’s priorities under its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Alliance is offering its expertise to support an enduring and equitable Green Recovery and ensure the improved resilience of Europe’s food infrastructure. EPPA’s President, Antonio D’Amato said, “Germany is taking on the Council Presidency at a challenging time. Europe is battling the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, both socially and economically, while trying to find smart viable solutions to bring about a transition to a circular, carbon-free and digitally advanced economy and sustainable food systems. We at EPPA share these ambitions and stand ready to help the German Presidency with insight and input from the packaging industry. “Our priority is to develop the best environmental, low carbon, renewable, circular and health-safe products throughout the EU for European consumers. Well-designed packaging today is necessary economically, socially, and environmentally to prevent food waste and deliver hygiene and safety whilst improving wellbeing within the context of our modern, interconnected society. “We support the German Presidency’s focus on strengthening EU cooperation where it matters, and ensuring Europe retains its competitiveness and sustains the well-being of its citizens. Packaging is already recognised as an essential infrastructure, and we have a lot of experience in ensuring that food chain is resilient, providing food for citizens, safely, hygienically and affordably. “We look forward to working with the German Presidency to ensure that the responsibility to deliver food safely and the many essential roles food packaging plays contribute to Europe’s Green Recovery and the review of how Europe can improve its resilience in the face of pandemics or other threats. EPPA stands ready to offer its expertise to both European and national policymakers.”
