EPC global event attracts top speakers

7 March 2005

Top brand owners and retailers, pharmaceutical giants, IT and logistics companies and a clutch of the world's leading RFID hardware and software suppliers have agreed to provide high-level speakers at June's GS1 UK EPCglobal Conference and Exhibition in London [Packaging Today –page 3, February].

Being held at the QEII Conference and Exhibition Centre, Westminster on June 7 in association with Packaging Today's sister publication RFID Solutions, the event will provide an anticipated 400 delegates with a comprehensive overview of the latest progress on RFID adoption worldwide.

Trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt has been invited to speak, while companies already signed up to share their expertise and experience include Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Astra Zeneca, Gillette, Tesco, Texas Instruments, research consultancy Ovum, and middleware supplier OAT Systems. Event sponsors, some of whom will speak, include BT Auto-ID, Zebra, Markem, Sato and IBM Consulting Services, while among a tranche of further prospective participants are The Packaging Federation, ADT, Wal-Mart, Nestlé, Cisco and Exel Logistics.

The conference will include a welcome and introduction from Jim Spittle, chairman of new single standards body GS1 UK [see adjacent story], an in-depth look by GS1 UK ceo Steve Coussins at the background to the organisation's establishment and a keynote address from EPCglobal president Chris Adcock.

The main emphasis at an event that should also provide a top-notch networking opportunity will be on the likely impact on the pace and breadth of adoption of ratification of both the EPCglobal Class 1 Generation 2 UHF RFID standard and the new European frequency standards. Retailer, brand owner and technology provider speakers will discuss their experiences and give their opinions and insights on RFID's short-to-medium term future.

Delegates will also be able to attend workshops examining how RFID is being implemented in the real world in the packaging and manufacturing, retailing and warehousing and distribution spheres.
