Energy-efficient lighting cuts Forum costs

5 December 2012

Forum Packaging, a paper packaging and printing specialist based in Lincolnshire, UK, expects to reduce its overheads by more than £20,000 a year following the installation of new energy-efficient lighting.

The company has replaced over 450 fluorescent tubes and sodium lamps with energy-saving induction lights that will reduce energy usage by over 160,000kWh a year – said to be equivalent to the annual energy consumption of about 30 UK homes.

Specified by a business local to Forum, Balcan Lighting Supplies, the £33,000 lights will be used to illuminate 145,000 square feet of Forum Packaging’s factory, including the main storage warehouse and printing hall.

The induction lighting will be controlled by motion sensors and will either be on and fully lit, or off with no cooling down period, which will allow significant savings, especially in the warehouse where lighting is only occasionally required.

“With the need to reduce energy wastage and minimise environmental impact we needed to find a cost-effective way to lower our electricity usage,” says Forum Packaging MD Mark Spivey.

“So replacing our old style, energy-heavy lighting was the perfect solution.”

“We are working towards our ISO 14001 Environmental Standard, so we are integrating a number of ways to be more energy efficient.”

Spivey adds that the 100,000-hour expected lifespan of the induction lights will also save the company labour costs in fixing and replacing damaged lights.
