Eco transit protection

A paper-based system for protecting fragile objects from shipping damage is an eco-friendly alternative to plastics, says the developer Geämi.

A two-part packaging concept, it comprises perforated brown Kraft paper made from wood certified according to Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standards says the company.

The Kraft paper is die-cut in a patented process with ‘thousands of horizontal slits’. When expanded, the paper becomes a three-dimensional, web-like honeycomb of angled cells. A layer of tissue is then laid on top for additional cushioning.

“The design of the perforated Kraft paper creates a structural protection,” says Valerie Reddemann, founder and President of Greenfeet, an online retailer of products geared towards a ‘green’ lifestyle. Greenfeet has been using its protective packaging to ship products for five years, says Geämi

Press two pieces of Geämi together and they lock in place, explains Lynn Moe, Business Development Director for Geämi Sustainable Protective Packaging.

With Geämi, it is also possible to create triangular ‘spacer pillows’ to prevent the contents from shifting in the box.

Heavier users benefit from an on-demand system made up of large-sized Kraft and tissue paper rolls, and an auto expander machine operated by a foot pedal.

For lighter volume shippers, Geämi has a ‘ready to use’ roll.

Geämi’s tissue paper is 100% post industrial recycled content. Brown Kraft paper can be either 100% virgin fibre, or a blend of post industrial and virgin fibre.
