Early learning helps to avoid leaks

7 November 2002

A new leak detector from Multivac is helping UK plastics bottle and closure manufacturer Alpla to become a fast learner when it comes to holes in containers.

The A200 is designed to accelerate the time it takes manufacturers and packers to discover microholes and potential flaws in the critical neck area of plastics bottles.

The machine uses a chamber to create a vacuum which causes any microholes to leak earlier than they normally would. This means that minute defects are shown up in a few minutes, rather than up to a day after filling when thousands of bottles could have been packed only to be thrown away later.

It can also be used in R&D trials to detect potential problems.
