DuPont packaging film technology has helped the Findus Group to launch premium frozen fish dishes to compete with chilled equivalents.
Young’s Fishmonger’s Choice single-serve cod and haddock recipes are sealed in a ‘unique’ Flavour-Lock Pouch developed by DuPont Teijin Films, believed to be the very first of its kind to appear in the UK.
The ‘innovative and modern’ packaging is said to replicate age-old cooking methods by acting as a roasting bag to steam and bake each fillet evenly while retaining the natural moisture and flavours of the dish.
Each product is partially vacuum-packed to remove air and decrease the effects of oxidation, which can lead to the deterioration of frozen food.
The product is designed to be cooked from frozen, either in a conventional oven for 30 minutes or microwaved for 4-6 minutes.
Fishmonger’s Choice is aimed at consumers that enjoy good quality food, but lack the expertise and confidence to cook fish at home.
“The launch in September is not just a one-off,” says Yvonne Adam, Young’s brand director. “It heralds the start of a long, exciting journey of NPD (new product development) for Young’s. The Fishmonger’s Choice range will be extensively developed over the next three years with new innovation planned every six months.”
Mitch Tonks, the award-winning restaurateur and fishmonger whose expertise went into the fish recipes, adds: “The launch of a range such as Fishmonger’s Choice is exactly what the category is crying out for. Our aim is to astound consumers with the quality and taste and I have no doubt we’ll achieve this.”
