Earthcycle Packaging and Innovia Films were winners at the 20th annual DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, for the Earthcycle-Natureflex Organic Kiwi Package.
The Organic Kiwi pack uses only renewable and certified compostable materials. It consists of three materials - an Earthcycle tray, Natureflex film and the certified home compostable label, together said to create “a responsible alternative” to traditional fresh produce packaging.
Canadian company Earthcycle makes its packaging from palm fibre – a waste product discarded when the palm fruit is harvested throughout the year for its oil from plantations in West Malaysia. The certified home compostable packaging complies with FDA requirements for contact with food. After use, it is said to turn into healthy, productive humus for the soil in less than 90 days.
UK based manufacturer of Cellophane films Innovia embarked on a development programme to adapt the cellulose base film to meet stringent compostability norms. The result is Natureflex - a transparent cellulose base film made from renewable wood pulp sourced from managed plantations, which meet stringent food and compostable requirements.
The “earth friendly” paper label, with a water based ink and a special adhesive, is also certified compostable. “
