South Wales-based closure manufacturer Dragon Plastics has produced what it believes is the lightest ever child-resistant closure.
Developed over the last year, the SavaloT is, in initial manifestation, a single piece injection moulded PP squeeze and turn bore seal closure with integral nozzle. Dragon says its extreme lightness is a result of its "revolutionary design".
Lugs on the skirt engage with similar lugs on the bottleneck finish and these are only disengaged when two visible press pads on the skirt are squeezed while the closure is simultaneously turned. Dragon describes this as "the classic two simultaneous actions which have ensured child resistance since the early '70s".
SavaloT is "revolutionary", Dragon explains, because, instead of being part of the closure skirt, the lugs are part of a child-resistant ring or cutaway skirt attached to the main body of the unit by two integral webs. "It is this design," says md Ian Parker, "that ensures the product's absolute lightness. It weighs 60% of the Dragon closure it replaces and under half the weight of it nearest competitor."
"What we have done is literally replace polymer with air."
