Decorative spirit at UG

10 February 2005

A sophisticated new glass bottle decoration facility which will predominantly serve the plant's spirits producer customers has come on stream at United Glass's Alloa plant in Scotland.

Creating 30 jobs, it has taken over the bottle decoration activities of UG's former Premier Glass Packaging operation in Kelliebank, which closed last September due to high operating costs and poor profitability. Decoration processes include bottle coating, automatic screenprinting, waterslide transfer application, ribboning and badge application.

The plant's electrostatic coating operation can handle 200ml-1litre capacity bottles in most shapes and colours, with volumes ranging from "a few pallets to millions". The coating process uses organic paint and the wide variety of colours and effects include translucent, opaque or etch effect.

Meanwhile the site's two automatic screen printing machines can handle round and flat containers, while waterslide transfers, especially suited to deluxe products, are manually applied and can be specified for volumes as low as a few pallets.
