Crackdown on copycats

28 May 2008

New regulations have come into force that will introduce an unprecedented ‘catch-all policy’ against companies trading unfairly with consumers, closing previous loopholes. One of the practices to be addressed will be misleading (‘copycat’) packaging of consumer goods.

As well as prohibiting unfair commercial practices, the new Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (CPRs) contain provisions against misleading consumers over the characteristics of a product and specifically ban the deliberate promotion of a product to suggest it is made by someone else. A breach will constitute a criminal offence.
