Consumers want clear definition of 'recyclable'

24 June 2008

According to a US survey conducted by Opinion Research Co-operation for the Glass Packaging Institute, 54 per cent of consumers say that for a company to label a product as ‘recyclable’, the product should be able to be recycled infinitely and be used for the product's original purpose.

Seventy-seven per cent of respondents said at least 50 per cent of ‘recyclable’ products should be able to be used for the product's original purpose. Using the study's findings, The Glass Packaging Institute made recommendations for changing language in the Green Guides, parameters set by the Federal Trade Commission that maintain ethics in environmental marketing.
