Cognex Xpand ups barcode reader efficiency

28 November 2012

New Xpand field-of-view expansion technology from Cognex Corporation enables logistics operations to read more barcodes with fewer readers, the company says.

Developed by the Massachusetts, USA-based company for use with its high-performance DataMan 300 series of image-based barcode readers, Xpand is intended to reduce installation time, setup duration and overall cost in retail distribution, parcel and postal applications.

“This technology significantly expands the addressable market for the DataMan 300 in logistics by allowing a single unit to see more of the belt,” says Cognex VP and ID products manager Carl Gerst.

“The DataMan 300, which was released earlier this year, has exceeded customer expectations with its ease-of-use and high read rates.

“With the addition of Xpand technology, the field-of-view of a single DataMan 300 can be increased by more than 50%.”

The increased read rates delivered by the Cognex barcode readers means a smaller number of packages need to be handled manually and fewer workers are required for re-labelling or rerouting rejects, Gerst adds.

DataMan barcode systems provide a good alternative to laser scanners, the company says, because they deliver “higher read rates, visual performance feedback and have a longer product life”.
