Co-op to launch whisky in world's lightest 70 cl glass bottle

14 April 2007

Alongside minimising the amount of glass being used in packaging, the new container, to be used initially for Co-op own-label finest blend scotch whisky, weighs just 298g, making it the world's first 70cl container to break the 300g weight barrier.

Developed by Rockware Glass and later incorporated into the Container Lite programme (a year-long project funded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme to promote lightweight glass packs), the bottle will start rolling off the production line this month and will be in stores by mid-May. The Co-op plans subsequently to move its own-label gin and vodka into the 70cl bottle, in a move it believes, overall, should save it around 20 tonnes of glass/annum.
