The January 16 story said burgeoning Chinese demand had seen steel prices "almost double" in the past year, rising from £221 to around £370/t, adding "as much as 4p to the price of a can of beans".
The MPMA acknowledges that price rises are unwelcome but says prices of steel packaging have actually only risen by 20% in recent months.
A metal industry analyst said the steel cost per can is around 1p/unit so, even if steel prices did double, the effect would be negligible.
