Burall Group looks to consolidate sites

27 May 2005

The Burall Group, the label and plastic packaging producer with two production and office facilities in Wisbech, is investigating options for combining the two sites' operations in one location in an attempt to cut costs, improve efficiency and make the best use of its logistics.

The company's Oldfield Lane factory, also the group's HQ, is a major producer of reel-fed self-adhesive labels, and acts as the sales office for the Burall Floraprint division, which supplies mainly plastics labels to the horticultural and garden centre sector. The second plant, at Cromwell Road, produces litho printed plastic cartons and other packaging, prints labels for the Floraprint business and handles smart card chip insertion and conversion for Burall's InfoSmart operation. The two sites currently employ around 300, but Burall's management is currently undertaking a consultation exercise with staff following the announcement of between 25 and 35 potential redundancies.

Andy Leet, Burall's chairman, says: "There are several crossovers in activities between our sites and it would make sense to run everything from one location. "We operate in some particularly competitive markets and have to look carefully at our costs, and a one-site operation would significantly reduce overheads."

Leet said that no timescale had been established for the mooted changes, adding: "Discussions are very much still ongoing."

The majority of the Group's labels and plastic packaging are produced for the food retailing sector.
