Budelpack strengthens position in colour cosmetics, fragrances and personal care

The purchase, for an undisclosed sum, will see Budelpack take over COSi’s activities in the manufacture and development of colour cosmetics as well as “spa and wellness”, skincare, haircare and bath and body products. The Maesteg plant employs 560 and has an annual turnover of €105m. Budelpack formerly operated a plant contract packing personal care, healthcare, pharmaceutical and home care products at Rhymney, South Wales, which was destroyed by a fire in March 2005.

Budelpack has announced separately that it is to move around 75 of the 90 staff currently employed at its Poortlvliet II facility in the Netherlands to a new facility, incorporating 6,000 sq m of factory and 1,000 sq m of office space, at Roosendaal, some 30kms away. The new facility will specialise in producing water-soluble packaging, principally for the detergent and laundry sectors. Manufacture of stand-up pouches and sachets currently undertaken at Poortvliet will be re-located to other Budelpack sites. It is expected that around 15 of the Poortvliet II facility’s staff will lose their jobs.

Budelpack says it is seeing “a very significant increase” in demand for water-soluble packaging; it has invested heavily in advanced production technology in recent years. It already supplies water-soluble and other pouches and sachets to such big brand owners as Unilever and Dalli, and believes the market for water-soluble detergent packaging will grow by between 5 and 10% in the next year.
