13 January 2010

The global market for brand protection is set to increase in value from US$6.7bn in 2009 to more than US$11.4bn by 2014 concludes a new study.

Pira International’s The Future of Anti-Counterfeiting, Brand Protection and Security Packaging breaks down the market by technologies, end-use segment and geographic markets, with five-year forecasts to 2014.

It explains the key drivers and trends shaping the brand protection market and provides an up-to-date overview of the competitive landscape and the major anti-counterfeiting organisations.

The FMCG sector is likely to see growth of up to 12.6%, with RFID proving a market leader and nearly 30% bigger by 2014. This is double the rate of growth of competing technologies 2D bar coding and security printing.

Pira International forecasts that lower margin products such as food and beverages will grow year on year by 9.6%, while premium products such as cosmetics and healthcare will grow by 11.3% and 12.6% respectively.

Other consumer packaging will increase by 12.5% and industrial or bulk packaging by 12.8%, annually.

Radio frequency identification is expected to lead the technology sectors to grow by 26.9% in the next five years, with 2D bar coding seeing 13.7 % growth and security printing 14.6% growth.

Substrates, inks and coatings will account for 60% of the total market. Holograms and DOVIDs (diffractive optical variable image devices) - growing yearly by 9.3% - will make up 22%, with some competition emerging from new optical technologies such as micro-optical arrays.

Geographically, Asia has 30.9% of the market compared to North America and Europe with 25.8% and 24.1% respectively.

Between 2009-14, the Middle East will have the highest growth at 16%, followed by Asia with 15.1% and Eastern Europe with 13%. North America is already a sophisticated market in terms of brand protection technology adoption and should see growth of 7.4%. Western Europe and Australasia will grow 7.7% per year over the next five years, concludes Pira.
