Biodegradable packaging from China

30 October 2008

Environmental packaging supplier Biopac has become the sole European distributor of Bulrush organic, 100 per cent biodegradable packaging. This is made from a common perennial plant which is grown wild in the low mountain areas and marsh lands of Jiangxi Province, in southeastern China. Harvesting takes place annually by local farmers, who would otherwise be unable to harvest any other crop on this type of wet land.

According to Biopac, there is also no negative impact on the environment in the production of the packaging. The pulp factory has stringent environmental standards which include management of waste water in a controlled closed system. The waste liquid is treated and never leaves the mill.

Mark Brigden, director of Biopac, says “Bulrush packaging fits perfectly with our product offering. Not only does it biodegrade within 90 days, its growth benefits the environment and it provides livelihoods for farmers with land that would otherwise be deemed as useless.”
