BAMA hails UK achievement as fillings rise

1 September 2006

UK aerosol fillings remained “robust” in 2005 the British Aerosol Manufacturers' Association (BAMA) latest data reveals, with fillings for last year showing a 1.2% rise on 2004, reaching 1.258.7 m cans.

BAMA describes this as “a return to the positive filling levels seen in 2002”.

Sue Rogers, director, says: This slight rise in overall filling is a remarkable achievement for the UK aerosol industry considering the competition the UK has had from fillers in Eastern Europe, the amalgamation of a few of our UK members and a general retail slowdown here.”

The biggest growth in fillings in the personal care sector came from the shaving products, hairsprays and hair mousse categories, and, says BAMA, can largely be attributed to industry “brand boosting”, i.e. line extensions to existing successful ranges of new product launches. Shaving product fillings rose by 15.1% to 223.7m units, while 117.4m hairsprays and 36.9m hair mousses were filled in the UK during the year. Similarly, deodorant, body spray and anti-perspirant filling, which dominate UK aerosol fillings, were also up just over one per cent.

Some household aerosol categories also fared well, with air freshener production up by 11.2% and oven cleaner fillings rising by 7.7%.

Second only to the US in world aerosol manufacture, the UK aerosol sector fills 28% of all Europe's aerosols, with at least 50% of the 1.2bn containers allocated for export.
