Ball sleek cans make start in Italy with San Benedetto

17 July 2012

Italian beverages company San Benedetto is the first in Italy to opt for Ball Packaging’s sleek aluminium 33cl can for its products.

Ratingen, Germany-based Ball only recently presented the new packaging format, which offers producers of sensitive beverages such as RTD teas, energy drinks and fruit juices an alternative 33cl metal container with stand-out appearance.

The Italian global company beverages company is launching its Thè San Benedetto flavoured RTD tea range (lemon, peach and green tea flavours) and Schweppes Tonica and Lemon cans (under licence) on the Italian market in the new shape package.

Schweppes is the leading brand of tonic water with almost 70% of the Italian market by volume. The Tonic and Lemon sleek cans will fully replace the standard cans in Italy.

According to Ball, the new sleek can is significantly slimmer and 5% lighter than the usual 33cl can, while still holding the same quantity.

By selecting the lightweight beverage container with its slim diameter of only 58mm, San Benedetto aims to reach “a trend-conscious, modern public”.

San Benedetto uses a range of packaging forms and sizes to attract many new and different consumer groups. The slender format of the sleek can is said to represent health, youth and freshness, and to further attract buyer attention, the company employs high definition printing on the cans.

Ball Packaging Europe sales manager Myriam Galmés says: “It is the first cooperation between Ball and San Benedetto. Ball expects several energy drink and tea producers will enter the market in Germany and the Netherlands with the Alu Sleek Can soon, following the health and wellness trend.”

According to recent figures from Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME), sales of beverage cans in Europe increased by 5.2% to 54.1 billion in 2010 compared to the previous year – with 2 million sold in Italy.
