Avery Shrink PS labelling for meat packaging ‘reduces costs’

1 October 2012

Avery Dennison Corporation is introducing a new Shrink PS pressure-sensitive labelling solution for meat packaging applications, designed to withstand the vacuum-shrink process without wrinkling.

Applied to vacuum shrink bags prior to filling, sealing and shrinking, Avery Dennison Shrink PS offers enhanced packaging flexibility and brand differentiation compared with direct-printed shrink bags, the California-headquartered company says.

The “brand-enhancing” solution also enables manufacturers to reduce or eliminate multiple sets of pre-printed shrink bag inventory, decreasing obsolescence and overall costs while allowing speedy decoration for seasonal and short-run opportunities.

“Avery Dennison Shrink PS is an exciting innovation that both enhances our customers’ brands and provides production-related benefits,” says Dan Galovic, market segment leader food, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials.

“This is a great example of how Avery Dennison can help customers solve difficult packaging challenges and take advantage of seasonal and short-term marketing opportunities.”

Potential applications include the labelling of processed and fresh meats, pork and poultry products.

When immersed in hot water following vacuum sealing, the label shrinks and conforms to the bag, delivering a smooth finish resulting in “excellent” aesthetic appeal.

The water-resistant construction and permanent adhesive ensure that this label stays firmly adhered to the end product throughout the value chain.

In addition, Avery Dennison has collaborated with Australia-based labelling equipment manufacturer Tronics to develop an applicator designed to automatically dispense Shrink PS labels to roll perforated vacuum-shrink bags.
