Tetra Pak will this year begin rolling out worldwide what it says is the world's first high barrier, clear aseptic stand-up pouch for beverages following the success of the transparent, squeezable pack in Mexico.
The Tetra Wedge Aseptic (TWA) Clear 200 S was developed "to provide beverage producers with an innovative alternative to existing portion packs" for juices, nectars and still drinks. It was launched last year in Mexico by juice producer Jumex for its "on-the-go kids' drink", Mundo Nautix.
Tetra Pak says "full global commercial availability" will follow by late 2007, after this year's introduction of the pouch to "other selected markets" (the US, Germany, Australia, India, Saudi Arabia, China and Japan are all interested).
The Wedge Aseptic Clear is made from a six-layer plastic laminate, features a PET/SiOx oxygen barrier and provides a receptive flexo printing surface. During processing the product is heated at high temperatures for "just a few seconds", reportedly resulting in a better taste and longer nutrient retention. Production costs are "comparable" to standard aseptic packages, with filling undertaken on a modified Tetra Pak TBA/19.
