They are made from Xamos, a new, in-house developed PET-based material which reportedly achieves an extremely high opacity at a low thickness “never possible before with monolayer PET”, allowing the containers to deliver a four-month shelf-life for UHT milk. Amcor says the bottles are “cost-competitive” with alternative forms of UHT milk packaging, including cartons and other PET and HDPE bottle formats, which it says have to be multilayer to achieve the required product protection.
The bottles are “lightweight, easy to handle and convenient”, while the precise injected finish ensures a tight fitting cap for full recloseability and a leak-free performance without the need for an aluminium seal. Amcor says they also offer an oxygen barrier “up to 20 times more effective” than HDPE.
