Amcor extends its PET capabilities

5 July 2004

Amcor PET Packaging is to expand its product offering with the introduction of single stage PET container manufacturing to complement the existing two stage process at its Gresford, UK factory.

Amcor has already secured its first piece of business for this new technology with a deal to supply PET bottles for GlaxoSmithKline's oral care manufacturing plant in Maidenhead, UK. The bottles will be used for Aquafresh, Corsodyl, Iodosan, Macleans, Odol, Mouthguard and Sensodyne mouthwashes, which are manufactured in Maidenhead and shipped all over the world.

The single stage process will enable Amcor to bring its extensive experience and expertise in PET manufacturing to an even wider range of products and sectors in markets such as food, personal care and agrichemicals. At the same time, the new facility provides existing customers with a fast and convenient method to market test new designs.

Amcor is installing latest state-of-the-art injection blow moulding machines that can produce bottles and containers from 25ml-5 litres in a range of neck sizes.

The company says the excellent efficiencies and flexibility of the new machines, combined with utilisation of the infrastructure of its existing PET manufacturing operation, mean it will be able to deliver real cost benefits to customers compared to existing single stage manufacturing.

"Although we are best known for our market leading position in CSDs, water, juices, dairy and alcoholic drinks, we also have significant experience in other sectors such as food, household products and personal care, " explains Amcor PET Packaging UK sales director George Hendry.

"Single stage is therefore a natural progression for our business to run alongside our two stage operation. More importantly, we believe our investment represents a significant step change in technology that will revolutionise the entire sector as well as enabling us to deliver quality brand-enhancing packaging at an appealing cost to many more markets."
